The name “Gunther” scratched into a pew. St. Peter’s on the Prairie, Tollville, Ark. (Taken with instagram)

Apparently, boys would surreptitiously carve their names or initials into the pews during the services. (This one was, not surprisingly, on the very last pew.) A few years ago, the church was going to refinish the worn and scored pews, but decided the carvings were too much a part of the their history. So they lightly sanded the pews, stained them and sealed them, preserving both the pews and the carvings for another generation.
